Line 5 changing, transform to:
36: Darkening of the Light
Hexagram 63- After completion, maybe counter-intuitively, describes the time just before a project is finished- the last few moments when you know you’re on track to be done with something, but there’s still a little more to go. It’s a time to anticipate the new beginning after the ending and to anticipate any last minute hazards so you can meet them without faltering. From this reading it appears that the energy of this day (and larger time) would best be harnessed by biding your time and not rocking the boat in order to protect whatever project or plan you are working toward. Too many “little fellows” are controlling the narrative. But, it’s very possible that soon they will fail.

Darkening of the Light describes a time of transitions when things are still dark and hazy; the dark forces are rising and things look really bleak. Do not call attention to your light; adversity is abounding at the moment. But there is light at the end of this tunnel, so stay hopeful if you have been experiencing hardship- the time of hardship will always have an end in the cycles of life. Right now, though the darkness prevails. Figure out a way to protect yourself and watch for signs of the change that is coming.

63: Line 5- “The eastern neighbor slaughters oxen to the gods. And yet, they do not receive the blessings that the western neighbor receives. The western neighbor need only make small, simple sacrificial offerings.” The extravagance of your offering is not the important thing when giving to the Divine. It’s the sincerity in your heart that matters most. Quality over quantity. Lavish displays will not buy you a ticket to Heaven, nor will it truly get you the things that matter in life. Just because you don’t have a lot in the stuff department doesn’t mean that the Divine thinks less of you- that's a human thing to judge others on what they have or do not have.

“[Do not attempt] in the dark chamber to deceive the Heart-Mind [of yourself and others], as the Spirits will not allow it.”

Historical context from the Zhou’s rebellion against the Shang

There was a major shift in the ways that people performed ritual offering between the Shang dynasty and the Zhou who rebelled against them and became the new dynasty. In the former, animal sacrifices were the norm; rich and powerful people offered big animals like oxen and performed lavish rituals and feasts to secure favors and blessings from Heaven. Poor people offered what they respectfully could, but the general attitude was that, in turn, their blessings wouldn’t be quite as good- that they were somehow substandard. When the Zhou established their dynasty, one of the things reformed was the nature of the ritual offering from one of sacrificing animals to offering more simple and humble forms of sacrifice, sincerely given. This is also a way of saying that just because you don’t have as much as others, what is important is that what you can give, you give with an open heart without expectation of rewards.

36: Ming yi/ Darkening of the Light

36: Line 5- “Jizi conceals light within the dark. An auspicious omen for future prosperity.” Though you may want to vocally state your position, now is not the time for it because there are numerous nefarious influences that are rising right now. You are in a weak position to persuade anyone. “The mainstream and the leadership are headed down a very dark path. “They have been led astray by malevolent forces.” Like Jizi, be clever in the way you both preserve your own integrity at such a time and do not provoke those who currently hold power.

Jizi was imprisoned by his brother who was the last Shang king, referred to as The Tyrant of Shang. The Tyrant, along with his concubine, Dazi (thought to be a malevolent fox spirit appearing as a beautiful woman) led the country into ruin through debauchery, greed, and oppressiveness toward the people. Jizi was a decent person who tried to warnRather than go along with the corruption, he faked insanity so that he could maintain his own value system, while avoiding the death penalty, which he would certainly have gotten for defying the norms of the king or for criticizing the way the king ran his country.

An interesting riddle observed in this Oracle casting-
